A List of Islamophobic Attacks Since San Bernardino

Below is a list of incidents that have taken place since the San Bernardino shootings.  An upswing in anti-Islam rhetoric has contributed to mosques, Sikh temples and other institutions being vandalized.  There have also been multiple instances of physical violence taking place:

Thursday, March 7, 2016 – Hood River, Oregon

A 66-year-old Buddhist monk was attacked by a man screaming anti-Muslim epithets in Oregon.  Kozen Sampson, who is the founder of the Trout Lake Abbey Retreat, says he believes he was attacked due to the criminal perceiving his garb to be Islamic.  The attacker punched the monk, then smashed him into the door of a car during the assault.  The assailant is still at large.

Thursday, March 3, 2016 – Spokane, Washington

A Sikh temple was vandalized in Spokane, Washington – by a naked man, claiming that the institution was affiliated with ISIS.  The assailant also desecrated the Sikh holy book, causing an estimated $30,000 in damages to the facility.

Monday, February 29 2016 – Buffalo, New York

An eyewitness reports that two young Muslim girls were walking from a bus stop – when a car with three men began pelting them with eggs.  The girls began crying, and the assailants fled the scene.  The girls are urged to step forward and file a police report.

Sunday, February 28, 2016 – Plainfield, Indiana

The headquarters of the Islamic Society of North America, or ISNA was found to be vandalized early Sunday morning.  The words “F*** Muslims” and “Sand N*****s” were spray painted on the walls, in addition to other epithets and lewd images.

Sunday, February 21, 2016 – Affton, Missouri

While house hunting in the St. Louis-area, a Muslim family were harassed and allegedly had a gun pointed at them by 72-year-old Leonard Debello.  Debello yelled “Are you Muslim?  All of you should die!” – at the family, which included children.  Debello was arrested, and the case is under investigation.

Thursday, February 4, 2016 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

In Seattle, a 28-year-old man was arrested brandishing a gun outside the Idris Mosque.  The assailant questioned the two worshippers about where they were from, then began hitting trees with a baseball bat.  He then pulled the gun, which was stolen – and started waving it at the men.

Saturday, January 16, 2016 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

A 34-year-old Muslim-American was harassed by a group of people who had taken offense to his speaking Arabic.  The man was punched in the back of the head and hit his head on the ground – forcing him to be hospitalized.

Saturday, January 16, 2016 – Bronx, New York City

A 43 year old man of Bangladeshi descent was attacked and beaten by two men screaming “ISIS! ISIS!”  The man was taken to the hospital and released. The attack happened in front of a 9 year old niece who the man was walking with, and the child was unhurt in the attack.

Tuesday, January 12, 2016 – Omaha, Nebraska

The Islamic Center of Omaha was targeted in an act of vandalism that left bacon on the facility’s door handles.  This is the 4th time in the past year that the Islamic Center has been targeted by vandalism.

Saturday, January 2, 2016 – Titusville, Florida

An assailant wielding a machete, slashed through a Titusville, FL mosque – breaking light fixtures and smashing windows.  Raw bacon was also left at the front door of the facility.

Sunday, December 27, 2015 – Las Vegas, Nevada

A Las Vegas mosque is targeted by a man, who is caught on surveillance video draping raw bacon on the door of the facility.

Saturday, December 26, 2015 – Brooklyn, New York

An Israeli man living in New York, was charged with a hate crime in Brooklyn.  40 year old James Samways was charged with harassing 4 Pakistani-Americans, yelling “I want to see the blood of Muslims in the street.”

Saturday, December 26, 2015 – Fresno, California

An elderly Sikh man was viciously attacked by two men, including being struck with an automobile.  68 year-old Amrik Singh Bal was called “Osama” and “terrorist” during the heinous attack, which left him hospitalized with serious injuries.  Police are offering a $5,000 reward for information on his attackers.

Saturday, December 26, 2015 – Tracy, California

Worshippers at the Tracy Islamic Center, in Central California find what appears to be the remnants of an attempted Molotov-cocktail attack.  No one was injured in the attack, which caused roughly $1,000 in damage to the exterior of the facility.

Thursday, December 24, 2015 – South Kingstown, Rhode Island

A Exeter, RI man was charged with threatening to kill a Muslim-owned convenience store employee, as well as various other threats during a drunken tirade.  “We don’t want Muslim stores in our neighborhood.” – along with threats of violence against the store’s staff.  The staff did not want to be identified, due to fear of retaliation.

Sunday, December 20, 2015 – Richmond, California

A man named William Celli is arrested on suspicion of a plot to conduct an attack on a local Muslim community.  Celli previously posted virulent anti-Muslim rhetoric on social media, as well as screaming “I’m going to kill you all.” to worshippers at the local mosque.

Sunday, December 13, 2015 – Hawthorne, California

2 area mosques were targeted by graffiti.  The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s Bait-us-Salaam Mosque had the word “Jesus” spray painted outside, as well as a fake grenade placed on the exterior of the building.

The Islamic Center of Hawthorne was defaced with “Jesus is the way” spray painted on the exterior.

Saturday, December 12, 2015 – Grand Rapids, Michigan

An armed robber shoots a store clerk of Indian Sikh descent in the face in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  The assailant screamed “I used to kill people like you in Iraq with no problem” – in addition to referring to the victim as a “terrorist.”

Saturday, December 12, 2015 – Richardson, Texas

A right-wing extremist group known as “BAIR” holds an armed protest outside the Islamic Association of North Texas (Richardson Mosque.)  This group has also held armed demonstrations outside the Islamic Center of Irving, and plans on holding more events throughout Texas.

Saturday, December 12, 2015 – Macon, Georgia

The Islamic Center of Macon is targeted by vandalism, with the words “terrorist” and other anti-Muslim graffiti scrawled on the building.

Friday, December 11, 2015 – Coachella, California

The Masjid Ibrahim Mosque in Coachella was severely damaged, after a firebomb was tossed into the facility.  A 23 year old man named Carl James Dial has been charged with the attack.

Thursday, December 10, 2015 – Phoenix, Arizona

The Islamic Community Center of Phoenix (ICCP) reported multiple broken windows, as well as a broken light fixture on its property.  This is the same mosque where armed hate groups, including neo-Nazis protested on May 29th and on October 10th.

Tuesday, December 8, 2015 – Grand Forks, North Dakota

A Somali owned coffee-shop and restaurant was severely damaged in a firebomb attack.  Juba Coffee Shop and Restaurant suffered $90,000 in damage, just days after Nazi symbols and hate graffiti were left on the building.  A 25 year old man named Matthew Gust was arrested and charged for his involvement in the attack.

Monday, December 7, 2015 – Jersey City, New Jersey

A threatening letter was received by the Al-Tawheed Islamic Center in Jersey City, calling Muslims “evil” and saying “We do not want you here.” The letter ends with “Get the hell out of our country, and go back to the desert.”

Monday, December 7, 2015 – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

A severed pig’s head was left on the doorstep of the Al Aqsa Islamic Society in Philadelphia.

Saturday, December 5, 2015 – Twin Falls, Idaho

A mosque in Twin Falls was vandalized, spray painted with the words “Hunt Camp?” across the facade of the building.  The term Hunt Camp is thought to reference an internment camp for Japanese Americans, which was also located in Idaho during World War II.

Saturday, December 5, 2015 – Buena Park, California

A Sikh Temple was vandalized in Orange County – spray painted with the words “Islahm” and “F*** ISIS.”  The perpetrator of the attack was eventually arrested, and stood in front of the congregation – issuing an apology.

Friday, December 4, 2015 – Palm Beach, Florida

A man was arrested in connection with ransacking the Islamic Center of Palm Beach.  Windows were found smashed, as well as blood being spattered across the prayer room.  27 year old Joshua Killetts also made earlier anti-Islam posts on social media, prior to the attack – one brandishing a weapon.

Thursday, December 3, 2015 – Tampa, Florida

Two Muslim women were attacked in separate incidents, in the Tampa area.  Both women wear the hijab, or headscarf – one of them claims her car was shot at, while the other had rocks hurled at her automobile.
